Locke and Key season 3: How did Ellie come back from the Black Door?

As great as it is to see Sherri Saum return in Locke and Key season 3 as Ellie Whedon, some fans are perplexed as to how she managed to come back from behind the Black Door after the events of season 1.

For those who need a reminder, back in season 1, Dodge tricked the Locke family by using the Identity Key on Ellie and making her look identical to Dodge. Tyler, Kinsey and the Savini Squad mistakenly threw Ellie through the Black Door after using the Omega Key, believing her to be Dodge.

In reality, the real Dodge was still alive and transformed herself into Gabe with the Identity Key so she could masquerade as a member of Kinsey’s friend group.

Locke and Key season 3: How did Ellie Whedon come back from the Black Door?

At the end of Locke and Key season 2, Ellie escapes from the Black Door after Josh Bennett and Eden Hawkins briefly open it. But as she’s still trapped in Dodge’s form, the Lockes don’t immediately know if they can trust her.

She walks to Keyhouse and Bode gives her the Identity Key to test her, since she’s not a demon, Ellie is able to take the key and thus proves herself to be Ellie and not Dodge. She reunites with the Lockes and turns back into herself. Later, Ellie reunites with her son, Rufus. Ellie also got to see the real Lucas again as he returned to himself after Kinsey used the Alpha Key on Dodge to rid his body of the demon once and for all.

At the beginning of Locke and Key season 3, Ellie and Rufus have returned to Matheson, albeit in a new rental home because Ellie is not ready to move back into their old home where they were terrorized by Dodge.
