At Netflix Life, our hearts go out to the family, friends and fans of Olivia Newton-John, who mourn the loss of an icon who succumbed to her long-fought battle with cancer this week. She was 73 years old and died surrounded by her family at her ranch in Southern California.
She was a fantastic performer whose career began at a very young age and continued for decades. Newton-John was an inspiration, battling cancer for over 30 years, advocating for the environment, animal rights causes, and breast cancer research.
Newton-John is probably best known as Sandy from the 1978 box office hit movie Grease, where she starred alongside John Travolta, who played Danny. The film was an adaptation of the Broadway musical whose soundtrack is karaoke gold and is one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time.
Newton-John and Travolta partnered in 1983 for another movie titled Two of a Kind. Although this film didn’t get quite the critical acclaim of Grease, the soundtrack faired much better than the film, giving Newton-John three hit singles. One of those singles from the film is “Twist of Fate.”
Stranger Things – Olivia Newton-John song
If you are too young to remember Newton-John’s 1983 hit song “Twist of Fate” when it originally aired on the radio, you might remember it from a more recent series. This song was featured in the second season of Stranger Things.
During episode nine “The Gate,” at the Snow Ball, as Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) enters the dance, “Twist of Fate” plays. The lyrics are perfect for the second season while several things are going on. Dustin has new found confidence as he goes into the dance, Steve watches Nancy as he prepares to drive off, Nancy watches Jonathan while he takes photos and the gang pick on Dustin about his new hair do.
The lyrics talk about second chances, getting things right this time, new beginnings, and life doesn’t mean a thing without the love it brings.
"Telling me to get it right this timeLife doesn’t mean a thing without the love you bringLove is what we’ve found the second time around"
Perfect for where the group is at the beginning of the dance with feelings that things will be alright. But, by the end of the dance, viewers know this isn’t the end.
Stranger Things has been an excellent series to bring back some fantastic 80s tunes for a new generation.
