Locke and Key season 2 recap: What to remember before Locke and Key season 3

We’re less than two days away from Locke and Key returning for its third and final season. Given that the show is coming back so soon, now seems like a good time to catch up on what happened at the end of Locke and Key season 2 before season 3 premieres.

The show’s second season set up an epic showdown between the Locke family and the evil demon Dodge, who took the shape of Kinsey’s boyfriend Gabe for most of the season.

By the end, many of the show’s most significant storylines were tied up neatly, but there were a few threads left dangling—in addition to the addition of a new formidable threat that the Lockes will surely face-off against next season.

Below we’ll recount some of the most significant events that occurred in Locke and Key season 2 to provide a refresher so you’ll be all caught up and ready to watch the third season!

Where did we leave all the Lockes at the end of Locke and Key season 2?

At the end of season 2, Kinsey, Tyler, Bode, Duncan and their friends team-up to take down Dodge once and for all. Once vanquished, a few things are set in order. Kinsey says her goodbyes to Scot, who has been accepted to the prestigious filmmaking program in England. He initially declines, but Kinsey convinces him to take it. She throws him a going away part at Keyhouse.

Tyler decides that he’s not going to use the Memory Key to keep his memories of magic because it’s too hard for him right now after everything that happened to Jackie. He decides to leave Keyhouse for now, since he is about to become a legal adult, and go out on his own for awhile. But Nina does accept the Memory Key, so we should expect to see her with all of her memories of magic intact in Locke and Key season 3.

Locke and Key season 2: Are Dodge and Eden dead?

It seems like it. Using the Alpha Key on Dodge allowed them to yank the demon out of Lucas’s body and set him free. The demon cannot survive without a host so we know that it likely disintegrated and probably fell into the sea with the rest of the cliffside villa.

As for Eden, without Dodge/Gabe to follow around, she returns to Wellhouse and summons Frederick Gideon using the Echo Key. He returns the favor by throwing her down the well, seemingly killing her.

Locke and Key season 2: What happened to Ellie?

Ellie finally manages to escape from behind the Black Door, still trapped in the lookalike form of Dodge. Bode tests her to see if she can take a key from him and when she can, he realizes that she is truly Ellie. They use the Identity Key to return her to her real form and Ellie even gets to have a touching reunion with Lucas and, later, her son Rufus.

Who is Frederick Gideon?

Even though Dodge and Eden are seemingly vanquished, things aren’t entirely peaceful or back to normal at Keyhouse.

As mentioned, Eden summoned Frederick Gideon, who appears to be the next “big bad” coming to hunt the Lockes in Locke and Key season 3. A British colonial soldier, Gideon was a captain who became possessed by Whispering Iron after he and some of the other soldiers stumbled on the Black Door in the sea caves.

Unlike some of the other unwilling demon hosts, Gideon was actually happy to play vessel to the demon and remains one in modern day after being summoned by Eden. Even worse is that Gideon now has access to two powerful keys, the Echo Key and the Anywhere Key, which allows him to leave Wellhouse and become a real threat.

Locke and Key season 3 premieres this Wednesday, August 10, on Netflix.
