The Sandman episode 10 recap: Lost Hearts

In an effort to get Rose on his side, the Corinthian tells her that Dream wants to kill her, while he wants to save her life. She and Jed stay in a hotel room while the Corinthian goes to give his speech down at the convention. Dream appears and we see that everyone else in the room is sleeping; we’re watching their dreams.

The Corinthian pulls out a knife to defend himself from Dream and ends up successfully cutting it through Dream’s hand. Dream is shocked and doesn’t understand how it could happen, but it’s because Rose is taking all of his power. She’s now taking Dream’s place at the center of the Dreaming. Rose is there, in her dreams, and though Dream begs her to wake up, the Corinthian tells her not to listen to him.

Dream explains that everyone in the Waking World will die if they don’t do something, and Rose pulls the walls between the two worlds back up. Dream must then destroy the Corinthian, making him collapse into dust. Only a small skull is left, which Dream takes with him.

The crowd at the convention is woken up, and Dream gives a speech to them all about the judgment he’s about to cast down on them. Because of their crimes and wrongdoings, he will make him feel the pain of the people they’ve harmed. They will forever carry the guilt with them.

After this, we quickly start to see the consequences of Dream’s power. One woman calls 911 to confess to a crime, while we see Nimrod shoot himself in his car. It’s total chaos, and Rose and Jed get out of there as fast as they can.

As for Dream, he says he’ll find Rose and find a way to end it all once she falls asleep next.

Lyta is in labor at the hospital, expecting her baby to be born. Rose believes Dream will kill her, but Lyta reminds her how much power she has and tells her to go find Dream and end everything.

Rose starts traveling through people’s dreams and sees a huge cloud in the sky and crack in the Earth that’s getting bigger and bigger. Dream appears and tells Rose that she’s already caused a lot of damage, but nothing he can’t fix. According to him, no one is safe until the Vortex is killed. Fiddler’s Green/Gilbert shows up and offers to sacrifice his own life to save Rose, but Dream says that isn’t possible. They discuss why Vortexes even exist, but Dream doesn’t know.

Meanwhile, Unity travels to Lucienne’s library in her dreams and looks for the story of her life.

Back to Dream and Rose, Dream says he doesn’t want to kill Rose but that it’s his responsibility, apologizing. Rose has come to terms with her reality, and says she’ll do whatever it takes to save her brother and her friends. Dream reaches out, seemingly to kill her, but not before Lucienne appears with Unity. Lucienne tells Dream to stop, and they explain that it was actually Unity who was supposed to be the Dream Vortex. The power was handed down to Rose because Dream was gone for so long.

Unity asks Rose to reach down inside herself and find whatever it is that makes her the Dream Vortex. Rose pulls out a black and red glowing heart and hands it to Unity, who takes her responsibility as the Vortex, as it was supposed to be. Unity dies in order to save Rose and the rest of the waking world.

But in a shocking revelation before Unity dies, Dream finds out that the father of Unity’s child had golden eyes, meaning only one thing — Desire. Dream tells Rose that she and Jed are children of the Endless, sending her back to the waking world.

Rose awakens to the news that Lyta had given birth to a baby boy. She and Jed go to visit them at the hospital and reveal their plans to return to New Jersey. Meanwhile, Hal decides he’s going to give New York a shot and will sell the B&B.

Dream calls on Desire and confronts them about having a child with Unity. Dream doesn’t understand what Desire’s intentions were except perhaps to kill their own blood. He reminds them that they only exist to serve the living, and threatens them not to mess with him again before storming off.

Dream gets an update from Rose as Lucienne tells him that a new book called “Into the Night” by Rose Walker has been added to the library. He knows she has a big story to tell. Lucienne asks if Dream will be creating any new nightmares to replace Gault and the Corinthian, and Dream shares some good news. He brings back Gault as a dream, declaring “new dreams, new nightmares, a new age.”

But The Sandman doesn’t exactly end with a happily-ever-after. Just before the credits start to roll, ominous music begins. Down in Hell, someone named Lord Azazel comes to see Lucifer on behalf of the Lords of Hell. They offer to invade the Dreaming if she wishes, but Lucifer has something else planned. Though she doesn’t disclose what that is, she says it’s something she’s never done before, something “that will make God livid and bring Morpheus to his knees.”

Lucifer looks out and sees her demons all chanting her name as the screen fades to black.

The Sandman season 2 has yet to be announced, but we’re hoping the Netflix Original is renewed soon!
