Breaking Bad is heralded as one of the best television shows of all time and even though it aired on AMC, it has become a vital part of Netflix as that’s where many people watched it or were introduced to the show for the first time. Beyond that, Netflix actually produced a Breaking Bad spin-off film called El Camino starring Aaron Paul’s character Jesse Pinkman.
It’s kind of surprising that now there are reports the series will be leaving Netflix in the near future. But then again, maybe it’s not so surprising when we’re living in an era of streaming wars. Networks want the rights to stream their own shows, especially one as popular as Breaking Bad.
AMC launched AMC+ a few years ago and is still working on beefing up the platform. Having this series on there would be a big get for them.
Vox previously reported that Netflix streaming Breaking Bad while it was still airing actually helped make the show such a massive success. Not only did we get El Camino, but the spin-off series Better Call Saul has also been tremendously successful and has received significant critical acclaim, just like the parent series.
When is Breaking Bad leaving Netflix?
According to a joint investigation by What’s On Netflix and The Wrap, it looks like Breaking Bad is expected to leave Netflix in February 2025.
Per What’s On Netflix:
"Our intel suggests that Netflix is set to lose all five seasons of Breaking Bad as soon as February 10th, 2025. According to our research, this date applies to both the United States and all other international regions."
Now these preliminary reports are very early, 2025 is still a long ways off and a lot of things could change between now and then. Netflix could come to a new agreement with Sony Pictures Television that allows them to retain the streaming license for the series, or perhaps even share it with another streaming service, like AMC+.
It’s too early to say this with certainty but it’s something to keep in mind if you’ve been postponing watching the show for any reason.
