Now that Virgin River season 5 has premiered on Netflix, fans want to know everything they can about what’s next after the shocking season 4 finale.

In case you’ve somehow forgotten, Mel’s pregnant and even though she wasn’t initially sure if the father was Jack or her late husband Mark, it turns out Jack is the father. Going into season 5, Mel and Jack are engaged and expecting a baby girl.

Obviously, considering Mel’s past with impending parenthood, her pregnancy this time around has been designated as high-risk. She’s still excited about becoming a mother, but she’s realistic about her limits and decides to leave her job at the clinic.

Throughout the new season, Mel and Jack weather various storms together, but one of the biggest tests of their relationship is going through a pregnancy together. In spite of those bumps in the road, what happens for the parents-to-be in season 5?

WARNING: This post contains references to pregnancy loss. Spoilers ahead from Virgin River season 5.

Does Mel lose her baby in Virgin River season 5?

Unfortunately, Mel has a miscarriage in Virgin River season 5. During the wildfire outbreak in town, Mel discovers that she is bleeding. While at the clinic, she takes a moment to herself and scans her uterus, only to discover that she does not hear a heartbeat. After breaking the tragic and heartbreaking news to Jack, Mel undergoes a D&C procedure.

Virgin River continues to brace this heavy subject matter with care and realism, and it’s surely so important to so many viewers.

Mel grieves the loss, as does Jack. But the couple has a disagreement about the future of their family. Mel opens up to Jack about not wanting to try to get pregnant again in spite of his hope to doing just that. She explains that she has had four miscarriages and a stillbirth and does not — cannot — go through the pain again.

It takes some talking with Jack, her family, and friends (and friends who have become family) to reach the conclusion that as much as she dreamed of having her own baby, becoming a parent doesn’t have to happen any one way. By season 5 episode 10, Mel and Jack seem to welcome the idea of becoming parents in the future.

Does Mel lose her baby in Virgin River season 4?

As soon as Mel becomes pregnant in season 4, she worries about the possibility of miscarrying the pregnancy for reasons dealing with her past and losing a baby before. There are two major instances in Virgin River season 4 where Mel fears she had lost her baby.

When Mel and Jack are involved in an emergency landing in a helicopter, Mel stresses that the impact could have caused issues with the baby. Fortunately, a doctor checks out Mel and confirms that the baby remained safe through the traumatic incident.

Later on in the season, Mel endures stress in her relationship with Jack. In the middle of the night, she calls Doc in panic due to the fear that there’s something wrong with the baby. Again, Mel gets checked out and everything’s all right with her pregnancy.
