Stranger Things creators reveal plans to fix their major Will Byers mess-up

When Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 first came out and viewers got to the second episode, “Chapter Two: Vecna’s Curse,” eagle-eyed fans noticed a mistake that has to do with Will’s birthday.

In the scene where Angela and the other bullies are circling Eleven at the skating rink, one of them is video taping the incident. The date that appears on the camera is March 22. The Netflix series had already established that March 22 is Will’s birthday back in season 2. However, no one seems to remember the day, including Joyce and Jonathan.

The creators of the show, Matt and Ross Duffer (aka the Duffer Brothers), admitted they themselves had forgotten March 22 is the young teen’s birthday. That’s why no one made a note of it in the episode. The two said they would be fixing the oversight because it would just be too sad to keep it the way it is. I think we all agree!

In an interview with Variety, Matt said they would “George Lucas” the second season’s episode where Joyce is trying to bring Will back from the hold the Mind Flayer had on him. They’re going to change his birthday to May 22 because May “can fit in Winona’s mouth.”

So what does “George Lucas-ing” it mean? The Duffer Brothers will be going back and editing what’s already been said onscreen. This is what the Star Wars director, George Lucas, has a habit of doing — editing his films years after they’ve been released.

And actually, the creative duo revealed this won’t be the first time they go back to make adjustments. They’ve edited small visual aspects from past seasons of Stranger Things without telling the audience. But, for those eagle-eyed fans who have the DVD and Blu-ray copies, the Duffers said viewers might be able to spot the differences between how things look on those copies and what’s playing on Netflix.
