When it comes to post-apocalyptic settings and the horror genre, production design becomes imperative to good storytelling. The look and vibe of a show is essential to setting a tone and creating an immersive world, and that’s especially true for a series like Resident Evil.

Based on the popular and iconic video game franchise, the new live-action series on Netflix explores how the T-Virus escaped into the world beginning in New Raccoon City in 2022. While watching the eight-episode first season, you might find yourself wondering where the show was filmed and whether or not production took place on location as the show itself has many varied locations.

Netflix Resident Evil filming locations

Resident Evil takes place in various countries, with the bulk of the 2022 timeline set in South Africa, where New Raccoon City is located. In 2036, we see Jade travel to places like London and Dover, England. There are also several scenes that take place on a ship in the ocean.

It’s fitting, then, that the bulk of filming took place in Cape Town, South Africa and England. Most of the internal scenes, such as those taking place at the Wesker house and inside Umbrella, were filmed at Cape Town Film Studios.

To create the post-apocalyptic environment, several abandoned locations were utilized for filming, such as the Werdmuller Center and the Maitland Abattoir. Production also filmed in London, England to create the backdrop we see in some episodes, such as episode 1, when you can clearly see Jade near Big Ben and the London Underground.

For scenes filmed at The University, aboard the ship, the cast and crew filmed on the Sarah Baartman, a South African environmental protection vessel, and the formar polar research vessel theS. A. Agulhas with assistance from the Frog Squad, which is a company specializing in underwater filming.
