Netflix Resident Evil episode 7 recap: Parasite

The seventh episode of Resident Evil takes us back a few years, to 2005 in the Arklay Mountains (a location that should certainly ring a bell for game fans!). In 2005, we meet the original Albert Wesker, as in the black-overcoat-and-black-sunglasses-wearing Albert Wesker from the games. It turns out that Albert cloned himself at least three times.

During the flashback he questions one of his clones, Bert, about the status of a “mind machine” device (probably Scarab or the P30 injection from the games). But Umbrella breaks down the doors and tries to arrest Albert for unauthorized use of Umbrella property. Albert shoots and kills one of his clones on the way out, leaving the Albert we know (Jade and Billie’s dad) and Bert behind.

Then in walks Evelyn Marcus. We can infer that this is what Evelyn was referring to before when she said she was the only reason Albert was still working at Umbrella. Instead of killing the clones, she allowed him to stay on at the company, but it looks poor Bert became a prisoner.

Back in 2022, Albert catches up with his clone/brother Bert. Bert explains that he has been kept in that cell all this time, which seems unfair since Albert has been able to live a life. Albert even tells Bert he has daughters now, which appears to re-energize Bert. He promises to help Albert as the Umbrella goons come take him away to see Evelyn.

We learn that Evelyn and Albert made a deal, essentially she would do his bidding and she’d let him have a life, even “create life,” hence the twins. Part of the deal was also just the ability to see how well a clone could acclimate to a normal life. That’s why Albert injects himself with the twins blood. Being a clone caused rapid aging and that kind of cell growth makes him sick.

As he ages, he is deteriorating more rapidly, which is why he has to inject himself more often than he used to. Evelyn demands he get to work on finishing Joy.

Meanwhile, Bert escapes from his cell and goes to pick up the girls, pretending to be Albert. He takes them to Olive Garden but Bert is kinda unstable and it becomes obvious to the girls quickly that something is off. Bert admits he’s not their dad and explains the clone thing.

We also catch up with Simon, at home, as he starts to realize just how messed up his mom is. Evelyn has been drugging her wife Diana with Joy to keep her occupied and from interfering with her work. Simon catches her doing it after Diana starts acting erratic.

Jade texts him to ask if he can come pick them up from Olive Garden, but before Simon can get there, Roth arrives to get them. They try to leave, but Umbrella catches up to them with Roth handcuffing Bert to the car and taking Jade and Billie with him to Umbrella Corp.

There, Evelyn greets them and tells them the truth about their father. She shows them how Jade’s blood cures Albert, who has refused to help Evelyn even though she threatens to withhold the cure from him. Albert genetically engineered Jade and Billie so their blood could fix him up.

He went from 0 to 20 years old in less than six months, hence all the health problems he’s having. Billie and Jade are left to deal with all the revelations their father has made with Billie even telling him she hopes he dies. They both think that their whole lives have been a lie, that he never cared about them, only using them for their blood, even though Albert claims that’s not true.

In 2036, Jade is all prepared to be a martyr and hand herself over to Umbrella. She finds a tracker in Mother Zero’s head, courtesy of Billie, who knew Jade wouldn’t leave without it when Billie kidnapped her. It’s what the University leader, Sakim, agrees to by making a deal with Evelyn, who, shockingly, looks exactly the same (that’s kind of explained later so just hang on).

Before she turns herself in, Jade tells Bea that if she doesn’t come back, Bea needs to grab her go-bag (straight out of Albert’s playbook!) stashed under Jade’s bed and make a run for it, as she fears something happening to her daughter. She also tells Arjun and Sakim to “press the button” soon, which will trigger the secret weapon The University has tethered to the back of the boat.

When Jade arrives at the Umbrella tent, set up on a little island nearby, she sees… Evelyn singing “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa? Yes, because Billie Wesker is pulling her strings. Evelyn has some sort of electrodes in her brain and now Billie can mind-control her. Interesting.

As expected, Billie emerges from the shadows and essentially thanks Jade for leading them straight to The University. She wants to destroy it because Billie hates everything that the old world represents and doesn’t want any of it preserved. “Bad things happpened in the past. You know. You were there.” Billie wants to build a better future, make the world a better place, eliminate the bad memories. She sounds just like Evelyn, doesn’t she? “Who’s controlling who?” Jade asks.

We also learn that Billie is still sick, I guess from the bite, it’s not entirely clear, but we know Jade’s blood still works wonders as she tested it when she had her in captivity. Billie basically needs Jade to be her personal bloodbag.

Billie issues the order for her men to take the ship, so Jade enacts her back-up plan. She whips out the vial of pheromones, the ones that attract zeroes, and breaks it. Hordes of zeroes emerge from the surrounding ocean and swarm the beach.
