We have news regarding Regé-Jean Page’s return to the hit period drama series Bridgerton, and it’s not necessarily something you’d want to know if you’re a huge fan of his portrayal as the Duke.

Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s top original series and has seen much success since it premiered back in December 2020. People absolutely fell in love with the beautiful love story between the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) in season 1 and wanted to see more of them as a married couple in future seasons. Unfortunately, fans didn’t get to see Regé-Jean Page reprise his role as the Duke in season 2 due to his contract being set for only a year. However, Phoebe Dynevor did return as Daphne in the second season.

To explain the Duke’s absence in season 2, viewers learn pretty early in the season that the Duke chose to stay at home with his and Daphne’s child. Of course, this didn’t pacify fans in any way, with many still holding hope that the Duke would one day make a reappearance in the period drama series. However, it looks like if the Duke were to be in future seasons of Bridgerton, Regé-Jean Page would not be portraying the role.

Although there are no current plans for the Duke’s return in the series, we know for certain that Regé-Jean Page has no intentions of coming back, according to an interview he did at The Gray Man premiere.

Is Bridgerton recasting the Duke?

As of July 14, there are no plans for the Duke to be recast. Netflix, Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen, nor the creative team have publicly spoken out about a new actor playing the role of the Duke. So although we won’t be seeing Regé-Jean Page in the series, he will still portray the Duke until further notice.

What does Regé-Jean Page think about possibly being recast?

During an interview with Variety at The Gray Man premiere, the reporter asked Regé-Jean Page his thoughts on people saying that the Bridgerton creative team should recast his role. He responds by saying, “They’re free to do as they like. Shonda (Rhimes, executive producer on Bridgerton) and I had a wonderful conversation at the end of Season 1. We were quite happy with how we stuck the landing on that one.”

So it looks like the Bridgerton star is doubling down on his past comments about not returning to the period drama series. He later mentions that he hasn’t watched Bridgerton season 2 yet and talks about his beloved character. He says, “We did so well on that redemptive arc that people forget that Simon was kind of horrific. He was the best example of a Regency fuckboy that any of us had come across. And so, because we came around full circle so well, because we stuck that landing, you’re left with this great feeling. You really do have to be brave about ending stories like that.”
