It’s almost time for Virgin River season 4 to bring the small town drama to Netflix this summer. After the season 3 cliffhanger, which found Mel pregnant but unsure if Jack’s the father, we’re looking forward to seeing all the answers come to light.

The trailer for the highly anticipated new season previews what’s to come for all of our favorite characters, including Mel and her baby. She and Jack consider a paternity test to determine who’s actually the father, and that could be an important decision to make for another reason.

In the Virgin River season 4 trailer, Mel receives news that her mother-in-law, her late husband Mark’s mother, wants to pursue custody of the two embryos she and Mark saved. The kicker? Mel used the embryos for IVF to try and get pregnant… and she is!

Not only does Mel have a paternity crisis on her hands, now she has to worry about a potential legal battle with her former family members. As they’re all still mourning the loss of Mark and attempting to pick up and move on, will Mel lose her baby (or babies) in Virgin River season 4?

Right now, we can only predict what’s to come for Mel and Jack and their baby in season 4, but with Jack’s sister Brie on their side, let’s venture to assume it’s unlikely for Mel to lose custody of her baby or any remaining embryos. But you never know!

As the trailer also hints, Mel and Jack ponder the possibility of taking a paternity test for the baby prior to giving birth, which would help their case with Mel’s mother-in-law. If Jack is really the father of the baby and it’s not Mark, then his mother has no standing to battle for custody.

Beyond the added stress Mel’s mother-in-law appears to have added on her pregnancy, we hope that Mel and Jack, no matter what happens, have a healthy and happy journey to parenthood. Things often go wrong in Virgin River, but we have faith this one will go right.

Virgin River season 4 premieres Wednesday, July 20 on Netflix.
