Does Number Five die in The Umbrella Academy season 3?

It’s time to celebrate because we finally have new episodes of The Umbrella Academy to binge! The Netflix Original premiered back in 2019 and almost immediately amassed a huge fanbase. The offbeat superhero show is based on the comic book of the same name written by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. Even if you haven’t checked out the comic book series, there’s no reason for you not to watch the awesome show.

With the major cliffhanger fans got at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2, it’s no wonder they’ve all been waiting at the edge of their seats for more. The 10 new episodes premiered in the early hours of June 22, and they present even more mayhem than we were expecting — including deaths and fake-out deaths.

Spoilers ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 3.

This season, there are multiple deaths, disappearances, and even fake-out deaths. We learn in The Umbrella Academy season 3 that Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan) is immortal — at least until the end of the season — as the Umbrellas realize they have to save the world once more against a Kugelblitz. This black hole is sucking up timelines and people with its “Kugel waves” as Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) calls them, meaning innocent civilians are being killed.

As you watch the new episodes, you’ll quickly realize that no one is safe this time around. Not even our beloved Hargreeves siblings!

As expected, Five has a bit of a trippy storyline, per usual, as this time around he gets to meet his older self who is dying. After Five realizes they have to put a stop to whatever is causing these waves, he and Lila Pitts (Ritu Arya) zap into another timeline in search of answers. They find the Operations Bunker to speak to the founder of the Commission, only to discover it’s an older version of Five!

Does Number Five actually die in The Umbrella Academy season 3?

The Five in this timeline is ready to die, but gives our present-day Five some vital information before he goes. He tells Lila and Five that there must be a Kugelblitz, and surprisingly advises them not to try and save the world again. Young Five does not accept this, understandably, but before he can get more answers, Old Five starts to fade. He mentions the word “oblivion” before passing away.

So yes, Number Five does actually die in The Umbrella Academy season 3. However, it’s a different timeline version of Five and not the one we’ve been following since season 1. Our present-day Five is still alive throughout season 3, even to the end.

In the finale, Five and his siblings are close to death when they find the sigil at Hotel Obsidion and the place turns into some type of energy force field that Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) is controlling. The siblings — with the exception of Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman) who made a deal with Reginald — are straining as they are being drained of their lives.

Reginald explains to Allison that the hotel is really just a cover-up and they’re actually inside a machine in another dimension. Number Five is somehow able to tell Allison that Reginald killed Luther before the life all but drains from his body. Just in the nick of time, Allison gets the upper hand and it’s revealed this version of Reginald is some kind of alien or robot. The siblings are set free as Allison saves their lives.

At the very end of The Umbrella Academy season 3, the world is reset and most of the Hargreeves find themselves together again in a new timeline where they no longer have powers. Number Five is very much alive and has to figure out what he’ll do next.

Number Five is one of my favorite characters in this show simply because he has the most interesting history and storyline. The Umbrella Academy season 3 ends on a bittersweet note while still leaving the door open for more story to tell. At this time, The Umbrella Academy season 4 has not been announced, but we’ll be on the lookout for any news on the show’s future.
