Matilda on Netflix release date, cast, synopsis, teaser and more

A movie adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl character Matilda will be coming to Netflix in December, the streamer announced back in 2021. But what do we really know about the movie so far?

The West End version of Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a “sharp mind and a vivid imagination, dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.”

Based on the book by beloved British novelist Roald Dahl, the musical won 47 international awards, and now a movie adaptation is coming to Netflix.

When is Matilda coming to Netflix?

Netflix announced back in 2021 that a movie adaptation of Matilda will be joining its vast library in December 2022, but when exactly?

Well according to Digital Spy, this new movie version of the classic novel will first be released in the UK on December 2, 2022, in local theaters, and as for other regions, the musical adaptation will be available on Netflix “that same month.”

On Aug. 30, Netflix announced that the musical film will come out on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2022. However, it will be released in select U.S. theaters first starting on Dec. 9.

Who is in the Matilda on Netflix cast?

According to IMDb, the cast of Netflix’s Matilda includes Alisha Weir as Matilda, Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Matilda’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, and Sindhu Vee as librarian Mrs. Phelps.

IMDb has also listed the following actors in roles for the movie:

• Lauren Alexandra as “The Acrobat”
• Carl Spencer as “Magnus the Escapologist”
• Louis Martin as “Miracle Parent”
• Jemma Geanaus as “Miracle Parent”
• And Antwan Eilish as “Kid in the library”

Netflix’s media center provided us with a brief synopsis for the movie, and although it doesn’t give away much about the plot, it does provide readers with some information about the movie. It reads:

"“An adaptation of the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical. Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.”"

Is there a trailer for Netflix’s Matilda?

The short answer is no, there isn’t currently an official trailer for Netflix’s version, but there are plenty of fun fan-made ones that you can check out on YouTube in the meantime. We’re sure that when we get closer to the release of the movie, a trailer will be provided.
