You might have noticed that the Elsa Pataky-starring action adventure film Interceptor has been sitting pretty in the Netflix Top 10 since its initial release on June 3, 2022. Right now, the movie is at no. 5, but it held steady at no. 1 for a while and has amassed over 50 million hours viewed. Does that mean we’ll see an Interceptor sequel?

Renowned novelist Matthew Reilly directed the film based on a script he co-wrote with Stuart Beattie. It follows U.S. Army Captain J.J. Collins (Pataky) who is remanded to an isolated nuclear missile interceptor base in the Pacific Ocean after she gets blacklisted for speaking out against sexual harassment.

The fast-paced military movie sees J.J. forced to fend off a deadly nuclear attack by domestic terrorists led by Luke Bracey’s Alexander Kessel. Pataky talked to Netflix Life about her reasoning for accepting the role and her desire to show her children that she’s just as capable of kicking butt as her actor husband, Chris Hemsworth.

And while Interceptor does wrap up its storylines, the ending leaves room for a potential sequel. Apparently, Reilly felt the same as he recently told Variety that he already has a second movie planned and written.

Will there be an Interceptor sequel?

The online response to the movie has been pretty brutal. Reilly admits he knows what his movie is, cheesy one-liners and all. But he doesn’t care about the hate, especially since Netflix likes the film. He also told the outlet that he already has a sequel written! So, while it’s not confirmed that we’ll get a sequel, it looks like the possibility for more is certainly there.

Reilly’s novels are written in a way that they are very over-the-top and fast-paced. He claims you’d need a significant budget to make them, something Interceptor did not have. Reilly wasn’t allowed to reveal the Netflix budget to Variety, but we know the film was designed to be made on a cheaper, smaller-scale budget, as you’ll notice the movie primarily takes place in a single location.

However, the director also promised that if Netflix lets him make an Interceptor sequel, then he’ll make his T2 or Road Warrior, a.k.a. the two highly-acclaimed Terminator and Mad Max sequels.

Would Chris Hemsworth return for the Interceptor sequel?

Asked if Hemsworth would return for the sequel (since he had a cameo in the first film), Reilly said the first film was probably a “one-and-done” for the Marvel star, but the sequel is also significantly larger.

"“I don’t want to speak for him but I reckon ‘Interceptor’ was a one-and-done. But let’s just say the sequel is about 10 times bigger. If he wants to be in it, I’m pretty sure we can fit him in somewhere.”"

Interceptor is now streaming on Netflix.
