Sorry Raising Dion fans, it looks like the show is finished at Netflix. According to one of the show’s stars, Sammi Haney, the series will not be returning for a third season. Haney took to her social media on Tuesday, April 26 to say that Raising Dion season 3 wasn’t moving forward.

It is important to note that Netflix has not officially confirmed the show’s cancellation yet, but I’m assuming Haney was given permission to break the news to fans. Haney played Esperanza Jimenez on the series, best friend to the titular hero Dion Warren (Ja’Siah Young).

Raising Dion will not return for season 3

Haney broke the news via Instagram, writing:

"“Sad to say that Raising Dion is cancelled. Thank you for all of the amazing support we got from all of our wonderful fans. Season 2 was a success, equal to Season 1, even if just looking at how many people watched all of it and wanted a season 3!”"

The actress continued, adding that the one “silver lining” of this cancellation news is that she is now allowed to pursue other roles, as she claims her Netflix contact didn’t allow her to accept “other major roles offered to [her] (1 actually written with me in mind).”

Raising Dion premiered in October 2019 and returned for season 2 in February 2022. Besides Young and Haney, the series also starred Alisha Wainwright, Jazmyn Simon, Jason Ritter, Griffin Robert Faulkner and Ali Ahn. Michael B. Jordan also served as an executive producer on the series and recurred as scientist Mark Warren.

Raising Dion revolved around Dion after he started manifesting strange abilities. He and his mom, Nicole (Wainwright) must deal with his developing abilities and the danger having these superhero-like powers attracts.

Why was Raising Dion canceled?

It’s not clear why Raising Dion was canceled. Haney says the show was equally successful to season 1, although we can’t confirm that since Netflix uses different metrics now than they did in 2019. The second season was reportedly watched for 108.75 million hours in its first 26 days on the platform.

Our best guess for now is that Netflix didn’t think the show performed well enough to give it more seasons, but Netflix has also curated an unfortunate track record for canceling series prematurely in favor of making more new shows instead of cultivating older ones.

Does Raising Dion end on a cliffhanger?

Yes, the second season finishes on a pretty significant cliffhanger and also teases a significant time jump in the end-credits scene. It’s unfortunate the show was canceled and Raising Dion season 3 will no longer happen (at least, as of what we know right now).
