Robert Eggers is a director known for his work on the indie horror flick The Witch and the black and white, mind-bending thriller The Lighthouse. But now, the infamous filmmaker takes a step in a much different direction with The Northman, and it really seems to have worked out rather well, given the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score.

The film stars Alexander Skarsgard as Amleth and follows the warrior Viking prince as he embarks on an epic, action-packed quest to avenge the murder of his father. Also in the mix for this well-crafted adventure is an impressive lineup of talented cast members, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Bjork, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Kate Dickie.

The Northman has a runtime of 137 minutes and was made for a budget of around $70-90 million, the highest of any of Eggers’s works by a lot. RogertEbert.com, The Guardian, and The Independent have given the cinematic endeavor a very high score and a robust amount of praise when it comes to the direction, performances, production values, and overall tone and atmosphere.

The streamer does an exceptional job of keeping its catalog packed to the brim with all kinds of timely stories, and when it comes to period dramas, subscribers will agree that the platform usually exceeds all expectations in this department.
