Bad Vegan: Where is Anthony Strangis now? Is he in jail?

By now, most avid Netflix watchers have either binge-watched all four episodes of Bad Vegan, put it on their list for the weekend or at least heard of the sordid saga centering on Pure Food and Wine owner Sarma Melngailis and her ex-husband Anthony Strangis (also known as Shane Fox).

Through four compelling episodes, Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. takes us on an unsavory journey where love goes really, really wrong. Oh, and Alec Baldwin is also involved for some reason.

But at the heart of this unfortunate tale of romance gone wrong is conman Anthony Strangis, who Melngailis tells us coerced her into giving him millions of dollars, draining her bank accounts, both business and personal. Ultimately, Melngailis lost all of her restaurants. Even after a brief reopening, she could not stay afloat while footing the bill for Strangis’ non-stop casino trips and other outlandish exploits.

You’ll have to watch the docuseries to get all the details, but know that Melgnailis’ dog Leon is a big part of why she stuck around and got involved with Strangis in the first place.

Is Bad Vegan’s Anthony Strangis in jail?

Given what he did, you might be wondering if Strangis ever spent time in jail. The short answer is yes, he did. The pair were arrested after running from the law and hiding out at a Tennessee hotel in 2016. They were held at Riker’s prison, and shortly after, Melngailis made bail, but Strangis never did. He could not afford his $350,000 bond and had no one to pay it for him at that point. He wound up getting time served when he finally made it to sentencing in addition to five years probation.

When Strangis finally left jail, Melngailis was returning to serve her short sentence. Having time served, New York Post reported that the courts sentenced Strangis to an additional five years of probation in 2017 for taking over one million dollars from investors and employees.

Where is Anthony Strangis in 2022?

Strangis is out of jail and has been for some time. He’s a free man, albeit still under probation. In the docuseries, many of those interviewed are disturbed by that fact as they feel like Strangis is probably continuing to con people.

His probation will end in May 2022. Between the time he spent in jail and now, Strangis has remained off the radar, so we don’t know where he is these days, maybe hanging out with the Tinder Swindler.
