Do you have to watch Vikings to understand Vikings: Valhalla?

Vikings: Valhalla has wasted no time becoming a hit with subscribers, but do people need to watch the popular spinoff’s predecessor Vikings to fully appreciate what the Netflix historical drama has to offer?

The History Channel’s first scripted series exceeded expectations in every way possible and became a big sensation with fans during its six-season run. And its follow-up, Vikings: Valhalla, has done quite the same, becoming a chart-topping endeavor that subscribers are can’t seem to get enough of from start to finish.

The series is set 100 years after the events of the original and focuses on Leif Erikson, his sister Freydis Eiríksdóttir, Harald Hardrada and the Norman King William the Conqueror. So far, the narrative has been an incredibly entertaining experience, with fans eager to see what will happen in the already announced second and third seasons of the show.

But can one thoroughly enjoy the riveting experience Vikings: Valhalla has to offer if they have not witnessed the glory of the original Vikings series? After consulting a few prophecies, it has been ascertained that a solution to this problem is within reach.

Do you have to watch Vikings to understand Vikings: Valhalla?

The easy answer to this dilemma is no. Viewers can go into Valhalla without having seen Vikings and absolutely enjoy everything about the Netflix series. The program is not a sequel but a fresh new storyline with the necessary context in every well-crafted episode.

The show does include references, homages, and easter eggs from the History channel series, but that ordeal is entirely separate. Their legacy is honored, but the intention is for Vikings: Valhalla to carve out its own place in history.

That doesn’t mean fans of Vikings: Valhalla shouldn’t check out Vikings if they get the chance. Luckily, they are on their way. According to What’s on Netflix, seasons 1-6 of Vikings are set to touch down on the shores of the streamer in the UK and US in 2024.
