Shirley release updates, cast, synopsis, and more

The phenomenal Regina King is set to bring her star power to Netflix once again. Subscribers last saw her in The Harder They Fall as the scene stealing Trudy Smith. The film, which was a western featuring cowboys, outlaws, and marshals that mark the halls of U.S. history with their stories, won’t be the only time she’ll be stepping into the shoes of a real life person for the streamer.

However, instead of donning the bowler hat of a fearsome woman, King will be embodying the soul, wit, and passion of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in the biopic, Shirley. The movie will center on Chisholm’s political career, her rising star, and the impact of her presidential campaign whilst also examining the toll it had on her.

This film is described as being an intimate look at Chisholm’s life which implies the biopic is a portrayal of who she was as a woman not only a politician and the vision she had for herself, Black Americans, and those continuously told to play their part to further the potential of others and not themselves.

Is Shirley filming?

Yes, the movie is currently in production. What’s On Netflix reports that filming began in December 2021 and is expected to run through March. The film will be shot in multiple locations. Currently, production is located in Cincinnati and will move to Los Angeles before wrapping in New York.

Given the above production schedule, we could see the biopic later in the year, likely sometime in the fall. The movie was on the list of confirmed Netflix original movies for 2022, so we expect it will land on the platform before the year’s end.

This film will tell the story of Chisholm’s boundary-breaking and historic presidential campaign, based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends and those who knew her best."
