The Fallout, starring Jenna Ortega and Maddie Ziegler, made its streaming debut on Thursday, Jan. 27. With its 92 minute runtime, the film takes its audience through the aftermath of a school shooting.
Vada Cavell (Ortega) and Mia Reed (Ziegler) are bonded through the harrowing event. The two young women had been in the bathroom when the shooting started. As denoted by their clothing and demeanor, they seemed to be walking different paths in life. What happened at their school, however, brings them into each other’s orbit unexpectedly.
In The Fallout, both girls are trying to work their way through the emotions their trauma is forcing them to contend with. The same can be said for their classmates and their friends and family members who have all been affected by the shooting.
The film is a coming-of-age story. One that takes a hard look at the unique experiences of Gen Z youth who’ve grown up with active shooter situations a part of the fabric of their education and lives. Due to its content, The Fallout is rated R for language, teen drug and alcohol use, and the intense, emotional events involving the school shooting as well as the trauma surrounding what happened.
