The Ring
Release Year: 2002
Directed by Gore Verbinski
Cast: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Jane Alexander, Brian Cox, and Daveigh Chase
One of the many American remakes of frightening Japanese films, The Ring absolutely delivers and became an instant classic when it was released in 2002.
Naomi Watts stars as Rachel Keller, a journalist who starts an investigation on a suspicious videotape that’s apparently cursed. After her niece Katie is killed with no explanation, Rachel takes it upon herself to figure out how a tape could’ve caused such a thing. Once Rachel decides to watch the tape, however, everything changes. She gets a phone call right after which tells her she has seven days to live, meaning only seven days to get to the bottom of the tape and stop it from harming anyone else.
Putting her journalism skills to the test, Rachel learns about a woman named Anna Morgan from on a nearby island who took her own life. She’s connected to the tape somehow, and Rachel takes a dark ferry ride to go find answers.
The Ring also stars Virgin River’s Martin Henderson, who plays Rachel’s ex-boyfriend and baby daddy, Noah.
The film was a pop culture phenomenon when it premiered, introducing American audiences to the videotape that kills people and the character Samara (played by Daveigh Chase). If you haven’t seen it, you absolutely must. It’s the perfect amount of creepy, eventful, and satisfying in the end. The Ring should definitely be added to your Halloween watch-list this year!
