Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan’s latest horror series for Netflix, isn’t your typical brand of chilling.
No, this limited series takes its time to reveal the sinister plot at the center of its story.
Set on Crockett Island (pop. 127), Midnight Mass is a horror that delves into topics of religion, faith, and the human struggle with mortality. The parishioners of the island are living in the shadow of their heyday. Their home was once a thriving, small-town community whose lifeblood was its fishing industry.
Now, however, they’re barely making ends meet and families are steadily leaving what’s lovingly referred to as the Crock Pot. It’s not until a new priest comes to town that the islanders begin to get back on their feet, and it’s because of the priest’s miracles. Suddenly the parish’s flock is flourishing and the pews are filled, but it comes with a price none but the priest is aware of until it’s too late and their fellow church members must choose how they want their lives to move forward. Under his stewardship or forsaking St. Patrick’s entirely?
Midnight Mass is an insidious tale of corrupted belief systems, manipulative figures of authority, and the monstrosity of humanity. The series is a Halloween pick that’ll leave you up at night though not to shiver over the creature that’s a part of its story but over the human tendency to lie to ourselves in ways that’ll leave even the cynical horrified.
