Desperate for some serious scares? Look no further than The Strangers. The 2008 psychological slasher wasn’t exactly a hit when it was first released, but it’s since become a cult film and for good reason. I personally can’t find a movie more frightening than this one, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t scare easily!
The Strangers follows two central characters Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman), a couple who are in a particularly rough patch while staying at their vacation home. Tensions are already incredibly high before the horror begins, which is one of the best factors of this movie. And things only get worse when they get a knock on their door from someone looking for a woman who isn’t there, and a full-on home invasion begins.
The pacing in this movie is fantastic and the suspense is enough to give you goosebumps with every scene. Plus, the soundtrack is incredibly creepy and only adds to the overall tone. Filmmaker Bryan Bertino did a great job writing and directing The Strangers, which I really cannot say good enough things about!
A sequel, The Strangers: Prey At Night, was released in 2018. Though it’s not nearly as good as the original, it is currently streaming on Netflix if you want to check it out.
There is no true horror watchlist without The Strangers!
