Unfriended

Release Year: 2014

Directed by Leo Gabriadze

Cast: Shelley Hennig, Moses Storm, Renee Olstead, Will Peltz, Jacob Wysocki, Courtney Halverson, and Heather Sossaman

If you’re looking for something gory and entertaining, Unfriended pulls out all the stops with jump scares, a twisted story, and a whole lot of blood. The movie follows a group of high schoolers hanging out over Skype (before Zoom was cool!), anticipating a pretty normal virtual night.

However, when an unknown user joins their call and is soon identified as Laura Barnes, a fellow classmate who sadly took her life about a year earlier after being bullied, the group is understandably unsettled. They first think it must be a prank by one of their friends, but as things start to get weirder with a game of Never Have I Ever, they realize that they might actually be in the presence of a ghost.

It becomes evident that these teenagers aren’t as innocent as they seem, and the longer they stay on Skype, the quicker the deaths come. Anyone who’s seen Unfriended remembers the gruesome blender scene!

Though it’s not the best-made movie ever, it’s certain to have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. When it comes to scary movies on Netflix to watch for Halloween, Unfriended is a must. Teen Wolf alum Shelley Hennig leads the cast as protagonist Blaire.

If you love Unfriended, be sure to check out the sequel, Unfriended: Dark Web. Although it’s not streaming on Netflix currently, you can rent it on Amazon Video.
