Army of Thieves ending explained

Army of Thieves, the prequel to Army of the Dead, is one the best heist movies of 2021. The new Netflix movies was released on Friday, Oct. 29, and it’s must-watch for fans of the genre and/or highly entertaining stories.

For me, this is easily one of the best Netflix movies of 2021, and I’m excited for what’s next, especially after seeing the Army of Thieves ending.

Matthias Schweighöfer stars in Army of Thieves as Ludwig Dieter, a safecracker, who is recruited by Gwendoline, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, to perform a string of heists with her team of Rolph, played by Guz Khan, Korina, played by Ruby O. Fee, and Brad Cage, played by Stuart Martin.

Spoilers ahead for Army of Thieves. 

How does Army of Thieves end?

In heartbreaking fashion is the right answer!

After being double-crossed by their former teammates and Delacroix closing in, Dieter and Gwendoline make a play on The Siegfried. Korina tries to buy them time, but she is arrested by Delcroix and possibly reveals the location of where Dieter and Gwendoline are headed.

With the safe loaded in the back of a truck, Gwendoline flies through the twisty mountain roads with Dieter in the back trying to crack the safe, which he does just in time. Unfortunately, Rolph and Brad aka Alexis are waiting for them.

After outsmarting them, Gwendoline and Dieter make for the getaway point, which is a boat on a mountain lake. When they make it, Dieter confesses his feelings for Gwendoline and they kiss! She feels the same, but this happiness is so short-lived.

Delacroix cuts them off on the dock. During the stalemate, Gwendoline negotiates her surrender in exchange for Dieter’s release, which Delacroix accepts. Dieter fleas on the boat with some of the money, leaving Gwendoline with authorities. They promise each other that they will meet again.

In the final scene, we see Dieter approached by Scott and Kate Ward (from Army of the Dead). They have the plans for the Gotterdammerung, the safe that Dieter and Gwendoline were going to find and crack together. Dieter agrees to join them on their quest into the zombie-filled Las Vegas.

With Army of Thieves being the prequel to Army of the Dead, we knew this story would end here, most likely.

My only hope is that now we could see what happened between Dieter’s escape and the events of Army of the Dead OR what happened to Dieter in the casino and right outside the vault.

We’ll have to wait for Planet of the Dead on Netflix to find that out!
