This movie is also based on a book, the series The Spiderwick Chronicles by visionaries Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, although they were not involved in the production of the film. While the “chronicles” is plural, the events of this Paramount/Nickelodeon movie take place over the course of a day.
In The Spiderwick Chronicles, twins, Jared and Simon, move with their mother and sister, Mallory, from New York to a 1920’s estate they’ve inherited. While exploring the mansion, Jared finds a book detailing the existence of magical creatures written by the estate’s original owner, Arthur Spiderwick. The book’s minuscule magical guardian Thimbletack explains that Jared, Simon, and their sister Mallory must protect the book from the evil shapeshifting ogre, Mulgarath, at all costs. If Mulgarath is freed nothing can stop him and his army of goblins from destroying both the human and magical realms.
Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel) stars as both Jared and Simon Grace, while Sarah Bolger (Mayans M.C.) plays their younger sister Mallory. The cast also features David Strathairn and Arthur Spiderwick, Mary-Louise Parker as Helen Grace, Andrew McCarthy as Richard Grace, Martin Short as Thimbletack, Seth Rogen as Hogsqueal, and Nick Nolte as Mulgarath.
Have any of these movies struck your fancy so far? You may recognize the next film, and although it’s not a Halloween movie, it definitely belongs on the horror-movie
