Labyrinth
Release Year: 1986
Directed By: Jim Henson
Starring: David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, Frank Oz
Labyrinth is a musical fantasy from Jim Henson that has shaped the lives of children for decades. In this live-action puppet mashup film, a stubborn teenager sets out on a quest through a fantastical land to save her brother from the clutches of the Goblin King. With exquisite costuming and colorful characters, there’s too much going on in Labyrinth to be scared.
On a dark and stormy night, Sarah is forced to babysit her baby brother Toby while her parents are gone. At wit’s end, Sarah wishes for someone to take him off her hands, and that’s when the Goblin King Jareth comes in. He steals Toby away before Sarah can take back her wish, and the only way for her to get her brother back is to make her way through a giant labyrinth to Goblin City before midnight. With imaginative allies and enemies throughout the labyrinth, will Sarah be able to make it to her baby brother in time, or lose him forever?
Labyrinth served as both Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie’s first big feature film as Sarah and Jareth respectively. Fun fact: the toddler who played Toby (who was 2-years-old when the film was released) went on to work as a sculptor/designer at LAIKA studios and most recently Disney’s 2022 Pinocchio remake! Good for you, Toby.
Puppets are not everyone’s thing, and can be scary by themselves, but this PG-rated film for sure belongs on your not-scary movie list this Halloween season.
