Best Netflix movies: The Edge of Seventeen

Release Year: 2016

Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig

Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick, Haley Lu Richardson, and Blake Jenner

The Edge of Seventeen is probably one of the best movies on Netflix that you’ve never heard of. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld as Nadine, a teenager who is dealing with the loss of her father. Her brother, played by What/If star Blake Jenner, seems like the perfect child. He connects with their mom much better than Nadine, and Nadine has a lot of issues being the other kid, so to speak. To make things worse, Nadine’s best friend starts dating her brother.

With few places to turn, Nadine strikes up a friendship with Mr. Bruner, played by Woody Harrelson who tries to help her.

The Edge of Seventeen is a great movie. While it uses common tropes from many movies about teens, it never feels like one of those many movies. It’s like the gold standard of teen movies.

Steinfeld is so good in this role. This was really her breakout performance, and I’m hoping she gets more roles like this in the future. If you haven’t seen this movie, check it out on the streaming service before it goes away!
