Best Netflix movies: The Lovebirds

The Lovebirds was added to Netflix this spring. Originally, the film was supposed to premiere in theaters, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was pulled from theaters and added to Netflix instead.
The now-Netflix original movie tells the story of a couple, Leilani and Jibran, played by Rae and Nanjiani respectively, who are about to break up. After witnessing a murder and them becoming the main suspects, the couple tries to do everything they can to clear their names, which leads them into various compromising situations.

Rae and Nanjiani have great chemistry, and their characters work together so well, and I don’t mean that literally. In the movie, Leilani and Jibran DO NOT work well together, at least not for more of the movie anyway.

I know this movie didn’t get great reviews, but I really enjoyed it. There’s always something so good to me about the disaster comedy, especially when it involves witnessing crimes and/or becoming suspects on the run. It reminded me of Date Night with Tina Fey and Steve Carell a little bit.

If you like movies like that, you’re going to really enjoy The Lovebirds! I’m holding out hope for a Lovebirds sequel on Netflix, too.
