Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan

Release Year: 2021

Directed by Olivier Megaton

Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan is a four-part true-crime limited series. The Netflix series is about the criminal Billy Milligan and his 24 personalities. The first episode introduces us to Milligan and a few of his personalities, including a Brit named Arthur, Ragen, a mean Yugoslavian, and a nervous young girl. Milligan’s defense is that if he were acting as one of his multiple personalities during the crimes, Milligan wouldn’t have known he was committing them. But was Milligan’s many personalities a creative act or honest?

In 1977, the Ohio State University campus in Columbus experienced a string of sexual assaults. Milligan was arrested not long after they were committed. Milligan’s lawyers and doctors concluded that one or more of Milligan’s personalities had committed the crimes. Whether you believe if Milligan was guilty or not, this docuseries has several scary elements. The entire situation is full of many grotesque aspects. The victims did not get any fair treatment, and Milligan received extraordinary benefits while being treated.

Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan is worth a watch if you are curious about multiple personality disorder, now called dissociative identity disorder or DID, which became a popular diagnosis after Milligan’s trial.
