The Ripper

Release Year: 2020

Directed by Jesse Vile, Ellena Wood

The Ripper is a British four-part true-crime docuseries recounting the events and investigation surrounding 13 women in West Yorkshire and Manchester between 1975 and 1980. The serial killer is Peter Sutcliffe, who was dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper by the press. Journalists noticed the similarities between Sutcliffe and the notorious Jack the Ripper, so they used the dubbed name to spark interest in the public. The docuseries follows the chronology of
events told through interviews with survivors, family members of the victims, and journalists.

The Yorkshire Ripper cases are scary because the police first ignored the victims because of their class and presumed profession. The case was the largest, most expensive, and most notoriously mismanaged manhunts in British history. Sutcliffe murdered at least 13 people and attacked a minimum of 8 more. Sutcliffe’s capture is intriguing because it wasn’t because of detectives closing in on him but because of an unrelated traffic stop. If you are a true crime fan, you will find The Ripper an exciting story to watch and see the story unfold. How the case was handled is scary, and so are the crimes Sutcliffe committed.
