Grey’s Anatomy was ShondaLand’s first hit series and has paved the way to Rhimes’ other series, like Private Practice, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder.

Grey’s Anatomy focuses on the team of doctors and surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital. While the series has a fantastic ensemble cast, including Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl, and Sandra Oh, the series revolves around Meredith Grey, a doctor in the residency program at the hospital, played by Ellen Pompeo.

It’s truly remarkable Grey’s Anatomy has been able to keep going strong for 17 seasons and more than  episodes. Over that run, it has remained one of the top shows on TV, averaging more than 15 million viewers per episode for the first four seasons. Although ratings dipped between season 6-9, they bounced back in season 10.

It’s a tough call, but based on Grey’s casting choices and revolutionary portrayals of female doctors in the series, I’m willing to argue that Grey’s Anatomy is the best medical drama of all time. Obviously, Shonda Rhimes didn’t reinvent the wheel with the series, but there’s no denying its popularity.
