Maid, a comedy-drama series based on a memoir, premieres on Netflix on Oct 1. The show comes from the producers of Promising Young Woman and Shameless.

The limited series stars Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood) as Alex, a mother who flees an abusive environment and finds a job as a maid. The show also features Nick Robinson as her ex Sean, Andie MacDowell as her mother Paula, Billy Burke as Hank, and Anika Noni Rose as Regina.

The miniseries is based on the book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive, a memoir from Stephanie Land. The book was released in 2019 to critical acclaim, reaching No. 3 on The New York Times Best Seller list. Land tells of her hard years working as a maid, struggling to lift herself out of poverty for the sake of her only daughter.

The intense topics of poverty, domestic abuse, class disparity, mental illness and being a single parent are balanced with witty comedy.

What is Maid about?

Alex is a young woman with dreams of going to college and becoming a writer. After she becomes pregnant, her priorities change. Her mother has undiagnosed bipolar disorder, resulting in her being an inconsistent presence in Alex’s life.

Sometime later, Alex takes her daughter and leaves her abusive spouse, plunging them into homelessness. After finding her way to a shelter for domestic abuse survivors, she manages to find a job as a maid through Miss V’s Value Maids. She must clean the most disgusting of messes from old cabins to rich households.

Being a maid is a grueling job and lifestyle that Alex must persevere through for the sake of her daughter. She faces another trial when her partner returns promising he’s changed. Letting him back into her life leads to a new string of complications, leading to a custody battle over their child.

Here’s the Netflix synopsis for their rendition of the memoir:

"After fleeing an abusive relationship, a young mother finds a job cleaning houses as she fights to provide for her child and build them a better future."

Will Alex be able to create a new life for herself and her daughter? Watch the show to find out. The limited series premieres Friday, Oct. 1 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 3:01 a.m. Eastern Time.
