It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a staple of the Halloween season. The 25 minute Peanuts holiday special has been a household favorite for over 50 years.

Viewers first learned of Linus’ belief in the Great Pumpkin in 1966 when Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang were gearing up for Halloween. Trick-or-treating and having the best costume was on most of the children’s minds but Linus had his heart set on something better.

The holiday loving, blanket carrying child knew that the Great Pumpkin would make his appearance during Halloween like a jack-o’-lantern Santa to pass out good will, cheer, and presents. A Sandy Claws before A Nightmare Before Christmas‘ time.

It’s Linus strong belief in this Halloween figure that sees both him and Lucy standing in the pumpkin patch waiting for him as the holiday festivities carry on without them.

As is typical for the Peanuts, humor is infused throughout the movie from Charlie Brown’s mishaps to Linus’ increasingly apparent lack of proof when it comes to the Great Pumpkin’s existence.

Unfortunately, the Peanuts classic isn’t likely to be broadcasting on television this year. In 2020, Apple TV+ acquired the exclusive rights to the franchise’s specials which marked the first time that It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown hadn’t aired on TV in five decades. According to Better Homes & Gardens, the Thanksgiving and Christmas specials aired on PBS thanks to backlash over the exclusive deal.

The streamer also provided access to the specials for free in the lead up to their respective holidays, but once those access windows closed only Apple TV+ subscribers were able to view the specials at their leisure. That currently remains the case, there’s been no word on if the streamer will take the Peanuts specials from behind the pay wall again for the holidays.
