There have been a lot of emotional moments across Lucifer‘s six seasons, but there is no denying that one of the most heartbreaking moments from the entire season came in season 5 with the death of Dan Espinoza.

As part of a pawn in Michael’s twisted game to bring Lucifer down, he ordered French mercenaries to kill Dan in order to make Chloe feel so guilty she’d go to Hell and be unable to be with Lucifer in the afterlife by his side in Heaven should be become God. Because the pain of Dan being murdered wasn’t bad enough, after his death we discovered he had ended up in Hell.

Needless to say, heading into the final season of Lucifer the biggest question on the minds of fans has been whether Dan would be able to find a way out of Hell and into Heaven. This being the final season, did Dan get a happy ending?

Did Dan make it into Heaven on Lucifer?

As the season begins, Dan is trapped in Hell and it’s clear Lucifer hasn’t yet been able to figure out a way to help his friend cross over into Heaven, but he doesn’t stay there long. After Rory flies down to Hell, she strikes a deal to fly Dan back to Earth in exchange for him telling her how he almost killed Lucifer back in the day.

What seems like a solution quickly proves to be yet another obstacle. You see, while Rory springs Dan from Hell his return to Earth isn’t quite what he expected. Because he is now only a soul, Dan is officially a ghost meaning only celestial beings can see him.

Although coming back to Earth as a ghost wasn’t how Dan envisioned returning to the land of the living, his second go-around on Earth helps him to realize the one thing he feels most guilty about:  leaving Trixie behind and never being the father she deserved.

After an interesting turn of events, Dans ends up possessing the body of the man who killed him which allows him to get some closure with Trixie. In an emotional scene, Dan gets the chance to express his sorrow for letting Trixie down while posing as a friend of Dan and Maze’s.

When he tells Trixie how much Dan cared for her and the guilt he felt for not being a good role model for her, Trixie tells him how proud she was to have had Dan as a dad and that she knows he’s always going to be with her.

His guilty lifted, Dan finally sees the light with his soul finally making its way to Heaven. And if there was any doubt that Dan made it to Heaven, his presence was confirmed in the series finale in a scene that saw Dan reunited with Charlotte in the afterlife.
