Where was The Chair on Netflix filmed?

The Netflix original series The Chair, starring Sandra Oh as the newly minted English Department Chair at a small Ivy League school, has all the air and quirk of a satirical academic drama.

From professors who refuse to acknowledge the changing pedagogy to the bureaucracy of academia that can steam roll even the most promising of careers, the show takes higher education to task with humor, wit, and insight. But it also has that crisp, autumn to winter feel of being on campus, shuffling from hall to hall.

You know the aesthetic. Tall, old brick building fronts, glossy wood floors, shelves upon shelves of ageing books with cracked spines full of thoughts and ideas from days long past. The wondrous and pretentious feeling of walking on the campus. The one that will make or break a budding future in the academic arts.

The Chair‘s Pembroke University, set in Pembroke, Massachusetts, is an English major’s dream. The idea of what many of us envisioned college to at least look like before we’d ever set foot on a university campus. However, there’s more fiction than fact to the Pembroke we see on screen.

Though Pembroke is a real town in Massachusetts, that’s not where the show was filmed. But don’t worry, the crew didn’t pull too much of a switcheroo. It still takes place in New England just a little more to the west.

Where was The Chair filmed in New England?

The Chair was filmed across two college campuses in Pennsylvania.

Bustle reports, based on the findings of Atlas of Wonders, that the series split filming locations between Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA and Chatham University’s Shadyside Campus in Pittsburgh. The Shadyside neighborhood also served as the town we see Ji-Yoon and the rest of the cast live and work in throughout the series.

So, if you loved the picturesque college scenery in the show, you were falling in love with architecture found in Pennsylvania’s higher education halls not Massachusetts’.
