Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action cast and showrunner

Netflix has set the cast and creative team for the live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. TVLine has reported that this news comes exactly one year after the original series creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, departed from the Netflix project.

The original series is set in an Asiatic world where some people can manipulate elements such as water, earth, fire and air. This is achieved by the Chinese martial arts variant known as “bending.”

Only the Avatar can bend all four elements and is in charge of keeping the balance between the four nations, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, the Water Tribe and the Air Nomads. The Fire Nation is ruthless and wants to conquer the world. Only the Avatar can stop them.

Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as showrunner and executive produce with Dan Lin (The Lego Movie), Lindsey Liberatore (Walker) and Michael Gio (American Horror Story). Roseanne Liang will co-EP and direct with Gio and Jabbar Raisani.

• Ian Ousley as Sokka, leader of his tribe, Katara’s brother

Kim has stated that this live-action version will set a benchmark in representation and bring this story to a whole new generation. He has no plans to modernize the story, but the world will be expanded while keeping true to the authenticity of the series.

This project was first announced in 2018 and is a reimagining of the original series. In 2010, M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed a live-action film. The original creators had no input in this production and have publicly stated they wished it didn’t exist.
