Romance movies on Netflix: My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

By the time My Best Friend’s Wedding hit theaters, Julia Roberts had been a Hollywood darling for nearly a decade. Mystic Pizza and the iconic Pretty Woman were two rom-coms that had set fans of the genre hearts’ aflutter with tales of women finding love and stepping into their own.

Arguably one of her most memorable roles, Roberts’ turn as Julianne “Jules” Potter cast her as a woman who realizes too late that her best friend is the love of her life. Starring opposite Dermot Mulroney as Michael and Cameron Diaz as Kimmy, she schemes to break-up their impending nuptials.

Jules had always thought she’d run out the clock. She and Michael had made a pact that if they were both still single at 28, then they’d get married to each other. However, Michael went and fell in love with a woman eight years their junior and now Jules has been invited to the wedding.

If this sounds like a mess, that’s because it is in the most delightful way as Jules’ plans put her and the wedding party in ridiculous situations that backfire one after the other.

Prepare yourselves for more than one musical moment, some intense chemistry, chances lost, and a reckoning with the reality that love and time wait for no one.
