Romance movies on Netflix: The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)

The Mirror Has Two Faces is a Barbra Streisand rom-com that will pique the interest of viewers looking for love stories between older adults. As thrilling as young love can be, romance between people who are set in their careers, in the knowledge of themselves and a little world-weary are too few and far between.

In this movie, Streisand plays Rose Morgan, a professor who’s begun to accept that marriage isn’t in the cards for her. Not because she doesn’t want grand romance or partnership but because relationships haven’t worked out for her, and she’s at a point in life where she believes they never will.

Enter Jeff Bridges’ Gregory Larkin, who is also a professor and bad at love. He’s come to the conclusion that sex ruins relationships and has decided he wants partnership without physical intimacy. Passion and attraction are great, but they’ve been nothing but trouble for him, so he’s tossing them out of the equation.

Together, the two work out how a long-term relationship could work between a couple that have cut sex, for the most part, out of their lives. Of course, ridiculousness ensues as do misunderstandings and a shying away of true feelings in an effort not to get hurt. Although the two have entered into their agreement with eyes wide open about the emphasis on partnership without a great romance, hearts do and can change.
