Romance movies on Netflix: Fools Rush In (1997)

Starring Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry, Fools Rush In leans hard into the Las Vegas tropes that have a special place in the romance genre. Though their characters Alex Whitman and Isabel Fuentes don’t get drunk and elope upon their first meeting, they do have a one night stand that turns awkward in the morning.

Alex, originally from New York City, is in town to supervise the building of a night club. Put together and used to the social riggers of the East Coast well-to-do, he’s thrown and attracted by Isabel, who’s not in the least bit uptight and is used to going with the flow. She has to be considering she’s an artist and from a big Mexican family where support, a bit of nosiness, and a heaping of protectiveness is par for the course.

Their one-night stand, however, turns into an impending birth as Isabel reveals that she’s pregnant, uniting Alex’s WASP-y world with her own. Now, navigating cultural differences and some cringey foot-in-mouth moments, the couple have to figure out what’s between them, if anything, as they get ready for the birth of their child.

Yes, there’s even a Vegas wedding involved. What’s a rom-com set in Vegas without some bad decisions, meddling and desert shenanigans?
