Romance movies on Netflix: The Best Man (1999)

With an all-star cast including Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan and Regina Hall in her theatrical debut, The Best Man is a rom-com that takes wedding secrets to a whole new level.

Diggs’ Harper is an up-and-coming writer whose book, Unfinished Business, about his and his friends’ exploits in college, is catching major mainstream buzz. It’s a dream come true with exception to the fact that his book, which he touts as a work of fiction, cuts a little too close to the truth for comfort.

For instance, he’s been asked by his best friend Lance (Chestnut) to be the best man in his wedding to Mia (Monica Calhoun). It’s an honor, of course, but there’s something that Harper and Mia have been keeping from Lance. Something that’s liable to break-up not only the wedding but the mens’ friendship as well.

It’s not uncommon for secrets to come to light at a wedding, but this is one that would be better staying firmly in the dark of the past. Though putting pen to paper and then publishing a whole book that contains more than snatches of the truth is on Harper. He’s the fool that’s put himself in this position.

However, putting all the cards on the table might reveal just why he’s such a commitment-phobe. Or it could lead to more romantic entanglements that would be ill-advised. Anything could happen when past feelings resurface as do old hurts.

The Best Man leaves Netflix on July 1.
