Netflix’s Persuasion release date, cast, synopsis, trailer and more

Much ado has been made about Bridgerton‘s hold on the Netflix subscriber base, but the period piece that’s stolen hearts isn’t the only romance genre IP making its home on the streamer. Netflix has decided to step foot into Austenland with their take on the classic novel Persuasion.

The modern adaption of the story, penned by Alice Victoria Winslow and Ron Bass, will see Dakota Johnson opposite Cosmo Jarvis as Anne and Frederick while the torn apart lovers rekindle a flame that was never quite snuffed out.

We expect viewers will need tissues as second chance romances—especially those with two leads separated not by a lost love but family pressure—can be tearjerkers.

How Netflix will handle bringing the original story published in the early 1800’s to life with a fresh look and updated sensibilities remains to be seen. However, we’re excited to see what the streamer and its production partner (the untitled MRC film romance label owned by executive producer Elizabeth Cantillon) have in store for us.

Here’s what we know about the newest version of Persuasion.

Persuasion release date

Netflix’s adaptation of Persuasion will make its premiere on July 15. The streaming service announced the release date of the highly anticipated new movie on April 21 along with a pair of first look photos that show Dakota Johnson in character.

In May 2021, Deadline reported filming in the UK was imminent, as fittings and rehearsals had already begun. With that timeline, it wasn’t likely we’d see the film by the end of 2021. Now it’s been confirmed that Persuasion will debut in summer 2022.

Persuasion synopsis

The official logline from Netflix:

"Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. Adapted from the Jane Austen novel."

As this is an updated take on the original novel, we expect much of what happens in Austen’s story to change as the film creates its own space in this universe. However, according to Deadline, Anne will still be 27 years old and unmarried.

A trailer has yet to be released for Persuasion. We’ll keep you posted on news concerning this modern retelling of a Jane Austen classic as it comes in.
