Shadow and Bone and Bridgerton were just a small glimpse into the powerful storytelling skills in Netflix original shows. There are more new original series on the way in the near future.

Among those upcoming series is a show called1899, and it is the brain head of creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the same creators who made the German thriller series DARK, which was a huge success on Netflix, receiving tons of critical acclaim.

Odar and Freise seem to have another trick up their sleeves as they experiment with this ambitious series that is slated to be multilingual and by the sounds of that, you definitely won’t want to miss this one.

What is 1899 about?

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, 1899 is about a group of immigrants who are in the search of a new life full as they journey across the sea to reach the land of endless opportunities, New York. While on their journey, the group runs into some mysterious happenings that definitely spell bad news. It’s a matter of life or death as they struggle to stay afloat in some horrifying waters.

1899 cast

According to Deadline, the cast of1899 features Dunkirk actor Aneurin Barnard, Jonas Bloquet, Andreas Pietschmann, Emily Beecham, and Elite star Miguel Bernardeau.

Additionally, The Witcher actor Maciej Musial is also set to star in the show.

As you’ve heard in the teaser 1899 will have characters who speak their native tongue, an aspect that the series’ creator is super excited to see as are we. Freise told Deadline:

"We just had a reading, partly on zoom, partly with actors who are here [in Germany], and it was such an amazing experience to hear everyone speak in their language, going from Spanish to French to Polish, and have it all come together. I hope it’s going to make English-speaking people learn and love different languages as well."

Production for 1899 is currently underway and it’s only a matter of time before we finally experience this incredible film. Until then, we’re staying away from any ships on stormy seas.
