Drew Barrymore’s latest comedy, The Stand In, has viewers seeing double as the actress steps into the shoes of two very different women, Candy Black and her doppleganger, Paula.

Candy’s star rose years ago, cementing her place among the Hollywood elite. However, despite being well-loved, her time in the spotlight begins to dim thanks to her own actions. Candy has a mean streak a mile-wide, and she’s been caught by the paparazzi in an altercation on more than one occasion.

Sentenced to rehab by a judge, Candy could work her steps and put herself on a better path but that would require her to actually go through with treatment. Spoiler alert: She doesn’t. Cue Paula, Candy’s body double who has dreams of making it big herself.

Seizing the opportunity Candy provides her, Paula casts herself in the role of a lifetime. The same role she’s been playing for years, that of Candy Black. All she has to do is convince people that Candy has changed. It shouldn’t be that hard, right?

What is The Stand In on Netflix?

Fans of Barrymore’s work in the Netflix original Santa Clarita Diet will be happy to see her return to the comedic movie. While she won’t be eating her neighbors or getting out of ridiculous situations with a TV husband, she does balance the dramatic with the comedic for a role seemingly made for her.

Barrymore has been a Hollywood darling since the ’80s. She’s no stranger to the pressures of stardom let alone the kind of divas that make life a living nightmare on set. Stand In looks to bridge the gap between the downside of fame with the hopeful beginning of a rising star.
