One of Netflix’s most highly anticipated documentaries in 2023 just has to be The Devil on Trial. It was released on the streaming platform on Oct. 17, and everyone’s talking about it. It has even generated a discussion about The Conjuring films.

If you watched The Devil on Trial on Netflix, you might be wondering why the murder trial that the documentary is centered around seems familiar. It’s probably because you watched the supernatural horror film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It aka The Conjuring 3.

The movie was inspired by the 1981 “Devil Made Me Do It” true-crime case or the murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, which is what The Devil on Trial focuses on. In 1981,19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson murdered his landlord and then claimed that he was under the influence of demonic forces. This was the first and only time demonic possession has been used as a defense in a US murder trial.

Now that you’ve finished watching the documentary, maybe you want to go back and re-watch The Conjuring 3. But where can you watch it? Is it on Netflix? Find out below!

The Conjuring 3 was directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Additionally, it’s a sequel to The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, and the seventh movie in The Conjuring film series.

The film begins with demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren performing an exorcism on a possessed 8-year-old boy. But everything goes incredibly wrong when one of the attendees at the exorcism invites the demon to enter their body. A month later, the attendee kills their landlord and later claims he was possessed by demonic forces when he committed the crime. Now, Ed and Lorraine are faced with one of the most sensational cases of their career.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return from the previous Conjuring films to reprise their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren. Ruairi O’Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook, Julian Hilliard, and many others also join them in the cast.
