Based on the memoir Guantánamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Salahi, The Mauritanian was released on February 12, 2021. Starring  Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley, and Benedict Cumberbatch, the film follows Salahi (Rahim) after he is captured by the U.S. government and sent to Guantánamo Bay detention camp.

As he lingers without any hope of release or a fair trial, he finds help in the form of a defense attorney named Nancy Hollander (Foster). As Nancy and her colleague Teri Duncan (Woodley) pursue justice for Salahi, a shocking revelation threatens to derail the case.

For those of you who don’t know, Guantánamo Bay is a military detention camp where prisoners have historically faced inhumane conditions and torture while being held indefinitely without a trial. You can read more about the facility here.

The film was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, with Foster winning for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. Congratulations to the cast and crew!
