Teen shows with Black leads: The Letter for the King

Rated TV-PG

Based on the Dutch novel De brief voor de Koning by Tonke Dragt, The Letter for the King is a coming-of-age fantasy adventure that follows young Tiuri (Amir Wilson) in his perilous journey to deliver a secret letter to King Favian of Unauwen (Yorick van Wageningen) before the next full moon in a fortnight.

Tiuri’s mission is a chance to prove himself. As the stepson of Sir Tiuri, he is expected to excel as a squire and aspire to knighthood but as hard as he tries, Tiuri isn’t as skilled as he is expected to be. He is also scorned for his Eviellan heritage which has not helped his station in the eyes of the Dagonaut people who see him and his mother as outsiders despite his father’s protection.

But it’s Tiuri’s Eviellan blood that may be the key to the fulfillment of a prophecy that will save his kingdom from Prince Viridian (Gijs Blom). Tiuri hears voices no one else can, a sign that power lies dormant inside him. Power that could be formidable if honed and brought to bear.

The Letter for the King deals with issues of prejudice and bias. Violence is a feature in the series including weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, minimal blood and gore, and character deaths. Jump scares are also present.

Season 1 of The Letter for the King is available to stream. The series has yet to be renewed for a second season.
