Teen shows with Black leads: Sister Sister

Rating TV-G

Sister Sister is a popular ’90s sitcom that launched Tia and Tamera Mowry into household names. The series aired from 1994 -1999.

Tia Landry and Tamera Campbell didn’t know the other existed let alone that they’re twins until a chance encounter in the middle of a shopping trip reunites the two. Refusing to be separated again like they were at birth, the girls get their adoptive parents to agree to living together under one roof. A decision that puts personalities to the test as Tamera’s father Ray Campbell (Tim Reid) and Tia’s mom Lisa Landry (Jackée Harry) are complete opposites.

Like Tamera, Lisa is flighty, impulsive, and unafraid of making her attraction known when she likes someone. While Ray is more like Tia, an intellectual, responsible, and mature. That, however, doesn’t mean the pair don’t get into their own share of shenanigans along with the girls and on their own.

Sister Sister deals with issues of parental death, grief, and adoption. The series follows the twins from their younger teens to college.

All six seasons of Sister Sister are available to stream.
