In the mood for a period romance drama with a diverse and talented cast? Then it might be time for you to start binging Bridgerton on Netflix.

Rotten Tomatoes has called season one a “delightful treat” with a “sterling cast” and we can’t wait to watch season 2, whenever it comes out. As we previously reported, season 1 only covers the first book, leaving plenty of room and material for more seasons to come. So fingers crossed.

Noted by NPR, Bridgerton is the first scripted product of Shonda Rhimes’ deal with Netflix through her production company Shondaland. Created by Chris Van Dusen, this period drama is loosely based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels of the same name. Dusen has previously written for other popular shows of Rhimes,’ including Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.

Binge worthiness aside, the new Netflix series is definitely not appropriate for everyone to watch. But before we get to its more adult rating, let’s briefly take a look at the premise for this one.

What is Bridgerton about?

Netflix describes the plot as:

"The eight close-knit siblings of the Bridgerton family look for love and happiness in London high society."

Starring Jonathan Bailey, Ruby Barker, Phoebe Dynevor, Regé-Jean Page, and a handful other other talented actors, the series follows a well-to-do and powerful family during the Regency era as they navigate high society drama as well as more intimate relationships and personal betrayals.

As you might’ve guessed, it’s loaded with juicy scandal after scandal and way more secrets than one typical season could possibly hold.

Is Bridgerton okay for kids to watch?

As previously mentioned, Bridgerton is not intended for all audiences. Most notably, it’s not suitable for children. According to IMDb, it has a TV-MA rating. Of course, if you’ve already started watching it, you likely aren’t surprised by this one bit.

On Common Sense Media, they note that sex, nudity, and smoking in this “sumptuous, diverse period drama” account for most of its TV-MA rating. On top of those adult themes, sexual politics are a key theme throughout. There’s also some serious cursing here and there, as well as as some very heated arguments, sometimes resulting in violence.

According to the TV parental guidelines, TV-MA is typically for people 17 years or older. Of course, if you’re a parent or guardian, you can try tuning in for a few episodes to determine whether or not the kid in your life is suitable to watch.

And if you are old enough to watch this one and in the mood for some serious drama, there’s no time like the present to check out season 1.
