The new Netflix movie, The Midnight Sky, stars George Clooney and Felicity Jones

“Is anyone out there?” The Midnight Sky, Netflix’s newest original science fiction film, is dropping on the streaming service tonight (Dec. 23). The movie features majestically bearded Oscar winner George Clooney (Ocean’s series, Michael Clayton) and Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, Rogue One).

You can watch the movie at 12:01 a.m. PT on Wednesday, Dec. 23. We’re going to be staying up late on Tuesday night to watch the new movie.

Based on Lily-Brooks Dalton’s debut novel Good Morning, MidnightThe Midnight Sky tells the story of grizzled scientist Augustine (Clooney), who is stranded in the Arctic with a young girl named Iris (newcomer Caoilinn Springall) after a global catastrophe. Together, they attempt to communicate with the crew of a spaceship returning to Earth, consisting of Sully (Jones) and other astronauts. The supporting cast includes David Oyelowo (Selma), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight), and Tiffany Boone (Hunters).

The Midnight Sky is directed by Clooney from a script adapted by Mark L. Smith, and it features a score from Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat, something I’m most excited for based off the trailer (which you can view below). The movie received a limited theatrical release earlier this month before its premiere on the service tonight.

Clooney apparently drew influences from modern space-set films, such as Gravity (in which the director-star was a cast member), Interstellar, and Ad Astra. I’m looking forward to seeing the treatment of the snowy, blistering cold setting, as well as Clooney’s take on the character of Augustine, written in the novel as an isolated, tortured soul on the brink of death. It’s sure to be a fascinating character study (big Logan vibes), an extremely wintry movie, and a gripping adventure plot to keep viewers engaged before the end-of-year season.
